Professor Jock Harkness graduated from Monash University and trained at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne followed by two years at Hammersmith Hospital in London and one year at the Mayo Clinic in the USA. He came to St Vincent’s Hospital in 1975 as Director of Microbiology. He has served as the Chairman of the SydPath Management Committee, Chairman of the Medical Staff Council, Chief Examiner in microbiology for the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and External Examiner in microbiology in Hong Kong and Sri Lanka.
He has taught medical students at both University of NSW and Notre Dame of Australia and held appointments of Associate Professor at UNSW and Adjunct Professor at UNDA and UTS. He has been involved in many research projects and is a NATA technical assessor. His principal interests are laboratory medicine and antibiotic therapy.
